I have a bone to pick, Internet. I am over the word “haters”. I completely blame T-Swift for its popularity, even though we all know she ripped her song from 3LW.
While I fully believe “haters” exist — and by “haters”, I mean people who just love to hate — I feel like recently, a lot of people are using the term a little too loosely. If someone upsets you, just take a breath and calm down before you cry “haters!” Think about it. Does this person really hate you?
Someone who doesn’t like you, or everything you do, isn’t a hater. They just have different tastes, and maybe you aren’t their cup of tea. That’s okay. Not everyone is going to like you, and your life will be a lot easier when you accept this.
Someone who disagrees with you, or is willing to let you know they do, is not a hater. They just don’t think the same way you do. This is a good thing! Not everyone should think the same, and you’ll be more open-minded if you accept how others think.
Someone who posts absurd comments on your blog because they get some sick satisfaction out of making people angry is not a hater. That is a troll. Don’t feed the troll; they love it when you give them the title “hater”.
As you can imagine, for someone who’s just expressing their opinion or disagreeing with you, being called a “hater” is not going to leave the best impression. It’s not the mature way to handle someone who doesn’t see eye to eye with you. Accept their opinion, consider it, and move on with your day.
