Top 8 Books I’ve Read in 2023 So Far

September 5, 2023

I’ve read just over 100 books this year so far out of my (new) goal of 150. I’ve read fantasy, classics, fiction, sci-fi, novellas, epically long novels, memoirs, nonfiction, and romance. But, more fantasy than anything, because it’s my favorite.

Harrow the Ninth / Nona the Ninth

The Locked Tomb series (beginning with Gideon the Ninth) is just incredible. Tamsyn Muir’s ability to write unique fantasy is unprecedented, and I will read anything she writes. Harrow ripped my heart out, and Nona felt like a warm hug. Waiting very impatiently for the next in the series.

Alone With You in the Ether

Olivie Blake is another of my favorite writers. Immediately after reading, I gave this one three stars, I believe. But this book has stuck with me for months. The writing and the characters were just memorable. I’ve gifted it to several people, because it’s that good.

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone

I didn’t expect to enjoy this one, being burnt out on Thrillers, but it was a book club pick. This was more than a thriller — it was a funny one. I breezed through this book with several laughs.

Fourth Wing

Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be. Fourth Wing has taken the book world by storm, with its sprayed edges (if you were lucky enough to get it) and everyone is anticipating Iron Flame this November.

Iron Widow

This historical-inspired, sci-fi combo book gripped me from the start. The characters were so well developed and fierce.

The Anthropocene Reviewed

John Green’s book of essays written during the pandemic is just feel-good.

Divine Rivals

If you enjoy fantasy and I can convince you to read one book this year, let it be this one!!! I love this book so much!

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn (Bridgerton #1)

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am one of many who watched season 1 of Bridgerton on Netflix without ever reading the series, but I kept meaning to read the books. I have to say, I do prefer to read the book first (and will be attempting to doing so with the rest of the seasons). As for this book, I almost feel like the tv adaptation is… better. The plot just felt like it was fairly simple. Have you read or watched Bridgerton?

The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #0.1-0.5)

4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Thanks for the heartbreak, SJM. This set of novellas made me love Celaena much more, and I almost wish I’d read it first before I ever read ToG.

It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it.”

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

I will always think of the 1995 movie, which I loved. While it’s a children’s book, it’s still a classic that withstands the test of time, being published in 1905.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass # 4)

4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

I really got sucked into this one, much more than Heir of Fire.

I accidentally slipped Assassin’s Blade, but I’m going to rebel and read it next. Then tandem read! Wish me luck 😂

Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams (Bromance Book Club # 3)

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This series is so fun! And I love a good friend to lovers trope. These are easy to read in one sitting!

What’s your favorite romance trope?
“How similar does someone have to be to you befo “How similar does someone have to be to you before you remember to see them, first, as human?”

Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult

5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Family/courtroom drama that will suck you in. The characters were so well developed and the story was so layered. This book was quite long, but I think it was worth it.
